The Bible can seem overwhelming at times. It’s a vast book written over thousands of years by a variety of people.
And yet it is God’s word. There’s no other book like it. The Apostle Paul wrote, “All Scripture is inspired by God, and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 CSB).
So how do we understand this important book? By reading it and meditating on it. As we do so, it helps to try to understand the big ideas of the Bible.
About Big Ideas
The Bible is a complex book full of ideas. We could spend decades mastering its content, and we’d only be scratching the surface.
One of the keys to understanding the Bible is to begin to understand the ideas that the Bible communicates. The Biblical authors wrote with purpose. They carefully crafted their writings to communicate something important that they want us to know.
Each book, and each passage of Scripture, communicates a central idea. It’s the focal point around which other supporting ideas in the text are organized.
This website is designed to help you understand the big ideas of Bible passages. As we try to sharpen our understanding of the big ideas, it will allow us to understand the details of the text as well in light of the big idea.
The big ideas on this website are provisional, not perfect. In other words, they’re a starting point. You’re invited to modify and improve them as you work to understand the central message of each passage of Scripture.
Who’s Behind This Website?
My name is Darryl Dash. I’ve been a pastor since 1991, and I'm currently pastoring Grace Fellowship Church Don Mills in Toronto. I'm also the author of How to Grow: Applying the Gospel to ALL of Your Life and 8 Habits for Growth: A Simple Guide to Becoming More Like Christ.
I studied under Haddon Robinson, author of Biblical Preaching, who has written extensively on the importance of the big idea in preaching.
In 2004, when I first heard Robinson teach on the big idea, I asked why nobody had created a resource that listed the big idea of every Bible passage. The answer: it’s harder than it looks!
This website is an attempt to do that. The goal is to complete this project by 2029, with regular updates taking place until then.
